The Value of a Venous Blood Gas in the Emergent Patient (for veterinarians)

A venous blood gas is a powerful tool for the assessment and monitoring of animals with urgent or emergent conditions. It requires a very small volume of blood, making it feasible in the smallest of our patients and within minutes provides information that can provide a diagnosis and help guide therapy. Depending on the equipment you use, a venous blood gas can provide acid base, electrolyte, blood glucose, lactate, kidney biochemical and hemoglobin values. This case-based discussion will provide an easily understood and clinically relevant approach to venous blood gas evaluation.
